The Full(er) Story of Long Beach GSC

On August 11, 2020, the Long Beach Green Schools Campaign (LB GSC) officially launched as the Campaign's second initiative. Spearheaded by Diana Michaelson, the campaign grew quickly as Poly students reached out in support of a transition to 100% renewable energy, The campaign's leaders include students Ruthie Heis, Emma Hunyh, Lily Palmer, Rohan Reddy, Kaaya Batra, Simona Michaelson, Victoria Quach, Hamid Torabzadeh, and many more. LB GSC is advised by Long Beach Poly teacher Patrick Gillogly, and works closely with Sybil Azur, a trained Climate Leader and leading figure in transitioning LAUSD to 100% renewable energy.

The student-led initiative has set a precedent for high school student involvement in school district policy and environmental stewardship. After two years of dedicated LB GSC advocacy, Long Beach Unified passed a policy committing to a district-wide transition to 100% clean renewable energy by 2030. The campaign has become a model for the future success to come in GSC chapters across the United States, and the team continues on to ensure implementation and share their insight with other young organizers.
